JAW COMFORT & MOVEMENT
TMJ is the joint. TMD describes the disorder.
Your temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull. TMD refers to conditions affecting these joints and the muscles that move the jaw. Painful movement, restricted opening, or a change in your bite deserve an assessment.
Start with a careful diagnosis
Jaw and facial pain can have several causes. A clinician reviews symptoms and medical history, examines jaw movement, and decides whether imaging is appropriate. Many TMD problems are approached with conservative care first; surgery is not automatically the next step.
Looking for a TMJ specialist in Fort Thomas?
Keep track of when symptoms started, which side is affected, and whether you have pain, locking, or difficulty opening your mouth. Tell your clinician about any injury and treatments you have already tried.
A jaw sound on its own does not establish a diagnosis. Tell the team about pain, restricted movement, or changes that affect eating or daily life.
Your questions, answered.
Does a clicking jaw always need treatment?
Clicking without pain is common and may not need treatment. Painful clicking, stiffness, or locking should be discussed with a dentist or doctor.
Will I need TMJ surgery?
Not necessarily. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Discuss simpler options, expected benefits, and risks before considering treatments that permanently change the joint or bite.
